Dubai Family Residence Visa for Business Owners: Documents, Steps and Common Delays (2026)

November 3, 2026 · UAE business insights

A practical Dubai family visa checklist for founders and investors: sponsorship eligibility, attested documents, medical tests, Emirates ID and realistic costs.

Can a business owner sponsor family in Dubai?

A UAE company licence alone is not a family residence visa. The entrepreneur must first establish an appropriate personal residence status and satisfy the applicable sponsorship conditions. Employees, investors and business owners holding valid UAE residence permits can generally apply to sponsor eligible family members. Before budgeting for a move, confirm the sponsor’s residence category and the issuing immigration authority.

Who qualifies and what income is required?

The UAE Government states a general sponsorship income threshold of AED 4,000 monthly, or AED 3,000 with accommodation. The authority may assess evidence differently for a company partner or investor than for a salaried employee; do not assume share capital or a trade licence substitutes for acceptable income evidence. Eligible dependants generally include a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25 and children with special needs subject to the applicable rules. Parent sponsorship follows separate conditions.

Documents to prepare before travelling

Prepare clear passport copies and recent photographs for each dependant; the sponsor’s passport, Emirates ID and valid residence permit; proof of income or company/partnership documents as requested; suitable registered housing evidence; and properly attested marriage and birth certificates. Foreign certificates may require legalisation and certified Arabic translation. Match every spelling, date and parent name across passports and certificates. Missing attestations are a common reason an otherwise straightforward file stops moving.

The application sequence

First verify the sponsor’s status and the family relationship. Next establish whether an entry permit or an in-country status procedure is appropriate. After entry or status processing, arrange approved medical fitness screening for dependants aged 18 or over. Complete residence and Emirates ID applications and any required biometrics. Dubai applications are handled through GDRFA Dubai and its authorised channels; other emirates may use ICP procedures. A visa decision is always subject to authority review.

What does it cost and how long does it take?

Avoid quotations based only on an advertised entry-permit fee. The complete budget may include entry/status fees, residence issuance, Emirates ID, medical fitness, health insurance, document attestation, translations and typing or professional coordination. Fees depend on the applicant’s location, visa duration and circumstances. Government charges must be separated from TTM service fees in a written quotation. An individual service’s published processing target is not a guarantee for the entire family file.

Common delays and how to prevent them

The sponsor’s own residence is not active; income or accommodation evidence is incomplete; a foreign marriage certificate lacks required attestation; names do not match; an adult dependant has not completed medical screening; or an applicant assumes a child or parent qualifies automatically. Review the complete family tree and documents before booking travel or cancelling existing status.

A practical founder’s checklist

Confirm the proposed company and personal visa route; verify each family member’s eligibility; collect and legalise civil-status records; check passport validity and name consistency; plan housing and insurance; obtain an itemised quotation; then submit in the correct order. For a family relocating from Germany or elsewhere in Europe, check home-country tax and social-security consequences separately with qualified advisers.
